The Surgery Services at the CHV Fregis

The CHV Frégis has not only a significant technical platform dedicated to soft tissue surgery, orthopedics and trauma of the dog and cat, but also neurosurgery ,oncologic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Use of advanced techniques for postoperative pain control is an important focus of the service.

The soft tissue surgery service is led by two specialists in surgery, Dr Poncet and Dr Ragetly. Dr Poncet is very well-known for advanced soft tissue procedures including, but not limited to, thoracoscopic or laparoscopic procedures as well as brachycephalic surgeries.

Soft tissue surgeries include :

  • Gastrointestinal and endocrine surgeries (foreign body extraction, biopsies, gastric dilatation volvulus , prophylactic laparoscopic gastropexy, thyroid, adrenal gland and pancreatic surgeries), liver surgery including portosystemic shunt correction,)
  • Thoracic surgery (lung lobectomy -including under thoracoscopy, exploratory thoracoscopy, chylothorax treatment, pyothorax, tracheal surgery)
  • Cardiac surgery (patent ductus arteriosus, persistent right aortic arch, pericardectomy - including under coelioscopy)
  • Surgery of the urogenital system (kidney, ureter, bladder and urethra, male and female reproductive systems including stenting, ectopic ureter, urinary tumors)
  • Surgery of the face and neck (including brachycephalic syndrome, laryngeal paralysis, laryngeal collapse)
  • Surgery of the skin including reconstructive surgery
  • Oncologic surgery

The orthopedic surgery service is led by Dr Ragetly who is also a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. The service focuses on all types of orthopedic trauma (fractures, luxations) and neurologic trauma (fractures and prolapsed intervertebral discs). In addition to surgery, the service also performs diagnostic evaluations of surgical candidates. One of the more common orthopedic problems in small animals is a rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament in the knee, which is the numberone cause of hind-limb lameness in the dog. Other conditions include hip dysplasia or elbow diseases. Arthroscopy is usually recommended for most joint diseases. Additional procedures are offered for a variety of problems, including correction of angular limb deformities, congenital defects (elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation) and any number of other general orthopedic issues. The orthopedic service also does consults on request for other services, generally for lameness evaluation.
